9 Things You Need to Know About Face Masks

Face masks are a common sight these days but how to wear and care for them can be confusing.

Totally Promotional recently debuted its own line of custom face masks to help customers cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. After much research, we discovered the polyurethane foam used for our best-selling can coolers was ideal for snug-fitting face masks!

Our Ohio-based manufacturing team used information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to create general use, reusable face masks that contour comfortably to the face. (A patent is pending.)

To get the most protection from your face mask, here are a few things you should know:

A guide for face masks

1. Face masks perform best when they comfortably conform and seal to a person’s face. The main benefit of a face mask is to protect the people that come into contact with you. However, a face mask that properly seals around a person’s nose and mouth is also likely to provide some level of protection for the wearer. Our face masks are designed with a three-dimensional contour that conforms to the face.

2. A well-constructed face mask should include multiple layers of fabric. More layers can increase filtration to keep germs from breaching the face mask. Our reusable face masks are made with a three-layer composite.

3. Face masks should be secured to the head with ties or ear loops. Totally Promotional’s face masks have two sets of elastic straps, including a 12-inch bottom strap that ties behind the head/neck area for an adjustable fit.

4. Always keep your mouth and nose covered. If your face mask does not sufficiently cover your mouth and nose, you are risking the entry of tiny droplets that circulate in the air when people cough, sneeze or talk.

5. Do not restrict breathing. You health may be compromised if your face mask constricts your breathing. This is especially true for people with chronic respiratory issues. We suggest slightly loosening the adjustable straps if necessary.

6. Do not touch the outside of your face mask when taking it off or wearing it. Touching the outside of your face mask is counterproductive since it may be contaminated with viral cells. If you happen to touch the front of the mask during use, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. (See #9 for face mask washing instructions.)

7. To put on your clean, general use face mask:

  • Wash hands with soap and water
  • Grasp the upper strap and place the mask to your face
  • Pull the upper strap over your head
  • Secure by tying bottom straps behind your head

8. To remove your general use face mask:

  • Wash hands with soap and water
  • Do not touch the outside of the face mask
  • Carefully untie the lower straps behind your head. Ensure they do not fall into the interior of the mask.
  • Grasp the upper strap; pull it back over your head and away from your face
  • Store used face mask in a paper towel or baggy until it can be washed
  • Wash hands with soap and water

9. Clean your face mask after each use. We recommend that you hand wash and air dry our general use face masks. Use a mild soap to properly clean the outer polyurethane foam and plush-polyester inside layer.
