Every host wants their guests to have fun, but not everyone knows how to throw a fantastic game-day party. That’s why I put together some great tips so you can make your gathering a huge success.

Plan ahead to score big

Don’t wait until the night before to grab the items you need. Popular items may be hard to find and you will be left scrambling for something to make. The key to success is shopping for sports-themed party supplies early.

We recommend making food ahead of time so you don’t miss any good plays the day of the big game. If that isn’t possible, be sure to have activities ready to go so guests don’t get bored while you prepare. Set out custom playing cards, board games or multiplayer video games in a convenient place for guests to keep busy.

Easy game-day snack to impress your guests

The trick to choosing snacks for the big game is finding something quick to make with ingredients that aren’t difficult to find. This recipe achieves all that!

Your guests will love Touchdown Taco Dip. It’s simple to make and always a big hit!

Touchdown Taco Dip

  • 2 (8 oz.) blocks of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 taco seasoning mix packet
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 16 oz. jar of your favorite salsa; choose chunky for more texture
  • ½ head of lettuce, shredded
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3 oz. can of chopped olives, optional
  • 4 oz. can of chopped jalapeños, optional

Directions for taco dip

Mix the softened cream cheese and sour cream in a medium bowl until smooth. Add the taco seasoning packet and mix until well incorporated. Spread the mixture in the bottom of a 9-inch-by-13-inch dish with a spatula and place salsa evenly on top. Sprinkle shredded lettuce first and then shredded cheese evenly across the dish. Feel free to add olives, jalapeños or any ingredients you like on top. Serve your taco dip right away with tortilla chips or keep it in the fridge until party time.

Extra tasks to achieve before the big party

Take the anxiety out of game-day prep with these tips:

  • If party expenses are getting out of control, ask your guests to bring a dish as their contribution. Most people are happy to help and it will take some of the weight — and cost — off your shoulders.
  • Be sure to check how much fridge space you have before planning your menu. You may want to cut back on dishes that need chilled if storage is limited.
  • Order gum with funny sayings to calm the nerves when everyone’s favorite team is struggling.
  • Having adequate electric outlets is something to ponder if you’ll need multiple slow cookers at the same time. Consider using a power strip. Check the user manuals for your cookware to be sure your home’s electrical system can safely handle it.
  • Not looking forward to cleanup? Get disposable plates and utensils for your game-day get-together. This will make cleaning up simple and painless.
  • Be sure to have adequate seating around the TV so everyone has a good view. You may want to invite fewer people or create other areas for those who aren’t big fans. They can socialize or play one of the games you prepared!
