Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the most popular Halloween candy in the U.S.!
According to national surveys, the chocolate cups with a smooth peanut butter filling are a Halloween favorite from coast to coast. Candy corn, known years ago as “chicken feed,” ranked as runner-up.
And OUR survey says …
Until recently, I wasn’t sure which Halloween candy reigned supreme with our entire staff at Totally Promotional! Why? Because most of us are sugar-holics. If it’s got calories, we like it. If it’s available, we eat it.
So, we conducted our own Halloween candy survey and discovered Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups was our overall favorite, too! It was a personal victory for me since I’m a long-time fan. Candy corn also ranked second place at Totally Promotional. Snickers candy bars were third.
The official state-to-state survey claims Milky Way is Ohio’s No. 1 Halloween candy. We live in Buckeye country but must have missed that vote! The chocolate, caramel and nougat candy bar landed in fourth place in our Totally Promotional survey.
Most popular Halloween candy began as a side gig
While doing a little research, I discovered that Harry Burnett Reese created the melt-in-your-mouth peanut butter cup in 1928 at his home in Pennsylvania. Although he was an employee of the Hershey’s company, the father of 16 kids made the candy in his basement to sell as a side income. After Reese died, his family sold the business to Hersey’s for a sizable sum.
Corny commercials
The real story behind the creation of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is easier to swallow than the nerdy TV commercials the company aired in the ’70s. They began with two clumsy people bumping into each other. Soon they notice their candy bar and jar of peanut butter have blended, and the accusations fly: “You got peanut butter in my chocolate!” and “You got chocolate in my peanut butter!”
Of course, after tasting the result of their collision, all is good.
It was a goofy ad. Who carries around a jar of peanut butter? But nearly 50 years later the familiar orange wrapper (and the 210 calories tucked inside) still has a pretty big following! You’d be wise to stock up on Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups this Halloween for all your ghosts and goblins!
