What do you get when you combine heavenly homemade cookies with holiday frill?  An elegant Christmas favor everyone will want!

Roll out the history of Walnut Snowball Cookies

Walnut Snowball Cookies have been around for centuries. They’re often called Russian Tea Cakes or Mexican Wedding Cakes, however, their actual origin is unclear. These round, nut-filled cookies coated in powdered sugar are a long-time tradition at Christmas.

But even these gorgeous cookies need some holiday aura before gifting to co-workers, neighbors or whomever.

It’s all in the presentation

It’s perfectly acceptable to buy a colorful holiday tin, stuff if with your cookies and place a ribbon on top. But if you want to get a bit more creative and personal, try this:

Walnut Snowball Cookie Favors

  1. Place your cookies in red or green plastic stadium cups or elegant frosted cups printed with your favorite Christmas image or personal message. Choose from more than a dozen imprint colors. Custom Styrofoam bowls with holiday napkins tucked inside also can be used as cookie containers.
    Cellophane Cookie Wrap
  2. Use clear or holiday cellophane to wrap the cookie-filled cups from the bottom up.
    Tie Cookies with Holiday Ribbon
  3. Gather the excess cellophane about 6 inches above the cup and securely tie it with a festive ribbon.

Oh! I almost forgot the most important part. The recipe!

Walnut Snowball Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. flour (sifted)
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. finely chopped walnuts
  • 2 c. confectioner’s sugar

Preparation

Cream together the butter, sugar and vanilla until batter is fluffy. Sift together the flour and salt, then add to the creamed batter. Mix thoroughly.  Stir in nuts. Chill for one hour.

Baking Walnut Snowball Cookies

Shape into 1-inch balls and place on baking sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for about 20 minutes. These cookies will not expand while baking and should not brown. Carefully roll each warm cookie in confectioner’s sugar until completely covered and place on rack. When cool, roll each cookie again in powdered sugar. Yield: 6 dozen.

Enjoy!
