The history of camouflage through the years
Camouflage clothing was created as a necessary tool to keep our military men and women safe. Before camo uniforms were created, troops smeared mud on themselves and their uniforms to blend in when outdoors.
Camo’s first job with the military was to disguise guns and vehicles. Covers were designed with colors and patterns to match the landscape.
The first camo uniforms
In the early 1900s, the U.S. Army adopted brown khaki and greenish-brown uniforms. It was the first attempt at creating camouflage clothing for the military.
Our military first used the traditional camo patterns and olive drab colors during World War I. According to historians, the army formed a special camouflage unit called the “camofleurs” to create the ultimate camo design.
In 1940, the Army Corps of Engineers did field trials with various camouflage uniforms. Three years later, U.S. Marines began wearing reversible beach coveralls with a green and brown frog pattern. The pattern eventually was also used for helmet covers and ponchos.
Camo interest tumbled before declaring victory
The idea of wearing camouflage chilled by the end of World War II. A four-color camo pattern was used sparingly during the Vietnam War. However, the army still preferred the solid, olive-green “boonie suit.”
The military didn’t give up on the idea of using camo. In the 1970s, the large, four-color pattern of black, brown, green and khaki became the new standard for U.S. camouflage. This “woodland” camouflage pattern was officially introduced in 1981.
Other camouflage patterns were used over the next few years such as the six-color desert-shaded pattern called “chocolate chip”; a three-colored desert pattern; a nighttime desert pattern; and a computer-generated three-color Universal Camouflage Pattern.
By the 1970s, the camo look was found in women’s clothing and hunting gear. However, it wasn’t until after military campaigns in Lebanon and Grenada in the 80s when camo became a hot fashion statement for civilians.
