Summer is winding down and that can only mean one thing: It’s tailgate time!
Beer pong and cornhole tournaments are fun pre-game festivities … chopping and mixing are not! So choose simple tailgate snacks that can be made ahead and are easy to transport.
Try these hassle-free midwest Ohio tailgate recipes:
Easy Tailgate Snacks
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1 cup butter
- 1/2 cup white corn syrup
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 6 cups Wheat Chex
- 2 cups thin pretzel sticks
- 1 1/2 cups dry roasted peanuts
Mix brown sugar, butter and corn syrup in a large microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave the mixture for 3 1/2 minutes until bubbly. Stir. Microwave 2 more minutes. Stir in baking soda and vanilla extract.
Immediately add Wheat Chex, pretzel sticks and peanuts and stir until well coated. (Note: The brown sugar mixture will harden quickly.) Microwave 2 minutes. Stir and microwave an additional 1 minute. Stir well.
Spread the mixture onto waxed paper and cool completely. Break it into smaller pieces when cooled and store in an air-tight container.
Football Cheese Ball
- 2 pkgs. (2-3 oz. size) dried beef, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
- 2 8-oz. pkgs. cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions
- 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 packet taco seasoning mix
- 1 stick of string cheese or 1 slice of mozzarella cheese
Mix together cream cheese, cheddar cheese, green onion, half the dried beef, Worcestershire sauce and taco seasoning in large bowl. Shape into a ball and turn out onto a sheet of plastic wrap. Use the loose ends of the plastic wrap to shape the cheese mixture into a football. Place the cheese football onto a serving plate. Cover the top of the cheese football with the remaining dried beef pieces. Use string cheese or mozzarella cheese strips to create “football laces.”
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving with crackers.
Touchdown Fruit Pizza
- 1 (16.5 oz.) roll refrigerated sugar cookie dough
- 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, halved
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 2 kiwifruit, peeled, halved and sliced
- 1/2 cup apple jelly
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 12-inch pizza pan with cooking spray. Press cookie dough evenly on bottom of pan. Bake 16 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool about 30 minutes.
Place cream cheese, sugar and vanilla in small bowl and beat with electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy. Place the mixture on top of the cooled crust. Arrange fruit any way you choose! Stir the apple jelly and brush it over the fruit. Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving.
